Weather Radar UK

Live forecasts update automatically; written guidance last reviewed 20 June 2026 by the Southampton Wire weather desk. Data from national met services via Open-Meteo.

A weather radar uses radio waves to detect precipitation across the UK, showing rain, snow, and hail in real time. For Southampton and the Solent coast, the live radar above tracks approaching weather systems, helping you plan the next hour or two.

How does the radar picture work?

Weather radars transmit pulses of energy that bounce off raindrops, snowflakes, and ice particles. The stronger the returning signal, the heavier the precipitation. Stations across the UK feed data to Met Office and BBC systems, updating every five to fifteen minutes. The radar above combines these scans into a seamless view, covering everything from local showers to widespread frontal rain.

What can you see on the radar near Southampton?

The live radar above shows bands of rain pushing in from the Atlantic, as well as isolated showers developing over the South Downs. You can also track snowfall during cold spells – a key feature for drivers heading north on the M27 or M3. While the radar covers the whole country, zoom in on the Solent to see whether the Isle of Wight ferry faces wet weather. For a broader picture, check the BBC Weather UK page or the Moderate Rainfall Warning for Hampshire.

Radar typeDual-polarisation C-band, operated by the Met Office
CoverageEntire UK and near continent, including English Channel
Update frequencyEvery 5–15 minutes, depending on scan mode
Detection rangeUp to 250 km from each radar station
Can the radar predict snow?

Yes – modern dual‑polarisation radars differentiate between rain and snow by analysing the shape and size of particles. When you see blue or white echoes on the live radar above, that often indicates snowfall, especially during cold spells over the South East.

How accurate is the live weather radar UK?

It is highly reliable for showing current precipitation within about 50 km of each station. Accuracy drops at the edge of coverage or in mountainous terrain. For planning ahead, combine the radar with the 10‑day forecast from Southampton Wire.

Where can I find a weather radar near London or Manchester?

The live radar above already covers both cities. Zoom in on the map to see weather radar near London and weather radar near Manchester in detail – useful for commuters watching rain on the M25 or M60.
